Who We Are & What We Do

Deus Caritas Est was established in 2007 to serve the invisible poor among us, with emphasis on feeding seniors in need right here in our community. Over the past 17 years, the Foundation has helped hundreds of seniors. Our all-volunteer staff work with and through local churches and senior agencies to identify families who face hardships due to illness, longevity, or both. After meeting with and verifying their needs, we provide food grants of SpartanNash food cards redeemable for $275 in grocery items. Delivered each month for an entire year, these grants provide food to seniors in need.

Our Mission

Seniors In Need Program

Deus Caritas Est established the Seniors in Need program to find, befriend, and feed the elderly in our community. The seniors we work with are the vulnerable among us living on an income of $1,500 a month or less, often forcing them to choose between food and medicine. Our goals in serving these seniors in need are twofold. Preserve their dignity and help meet their nutritional needs. Once qualified, we provide an annual food grant of $3,300, delivered each month on a food card loaded with $275 redeemable at SpartanNash grocery stores around the Grand Rapids area for food items only. We have partnered with SpartanNash to provide this assistance since 2007. We annually issue over $39,000 in food grants. But there are so many more we could help.

Why You Should Give

“The poor you will always have among you.” Matthew 26:11. And the statistics support this sad truth: (1) 45% of seniors live on income of less than $22,000 and 15% live on income of less than $12,000 annually [Source: Kaiser Family Foundation]; (2) in Michigan, 15% of the elderly population face hunger daily [Source: The State of Senior Hunger in America]; (3) in West Michigan, food insecurity affects 1 in 8 people [Source: Feeding America]; (4) the rate of hunger among seniors aged 60 and older has increased by 45% since 2001 and at the current rate, the number of food-insecure seniors may grow to more than 7 million by 2050 [Source: Feeding America].

But hunger among the elderly is about more than statistics. It is about respecting the dignity of the human person. So, the elderly we minister to are more than a number to us. They are people we know. We hope you will help us with our mission. If we all do a little, we can accomplish a great deal.
